The Royal Marines’ Charity needs to raise £2.5M each year to meet
the needs of the Royal Marines Corps Family. After withdrawal from
Afghanistan in 2014, with the military out of the public eye, it is
becoming more difficult to secure funding streams so vital to support the lives of those injured, and their families. The Royal Marines 1664 Global Challenge 2017 intends to contribute to achieving this. The Royal Marines’ Charity is now focusing on providing an enduring and sustainable fundraising and grant-making capability that will allow them to support the Royal Marines Family for many years to come.
The small band of 8 Royal Marines entrenched within the Royal Navy’s
Maritime Operations Centre will endeavour to cycle 1664 miles, run 1664 miles and swim 166.4 miles over the 100 days of Royal Marines Global Challenges. The title comes from the fact that on the 28 October 1664 the Royal Marines were formally established by Royal decree.
Two months out, with 2 swimmers, 2 cyclists and 4 runners, confidence is high. But I suspect when the reality of work commitments kicks in and the days of missed training mount up, the money raised will help give a much needed boost to get some panic mileage racked up!
