Story
We set this page up on October 22nd 2012. And so it was that on October 22nd 2013, exactly a year later, almost to the hour, that Shuktara took possession of a house in Calcutta that will be known as ‘Lula Bari’ (Bengali for Lula’s House). As a friend said to me ‘she is still directing the traffic’!
The girls have now moved into their new home and without wanting to raise the spectre of ‘charity fatigue’ we need to keep up the momentum to enable Shuktara to continue its work. If any of you feel you can give a regular amount, no matter how small I know it will be well spent and they would be so very grateful. Below is the story so far of this wonderful endeavour...

Lula died on Monday 19th November suddenly and without pain after suffering for the previous few months from an aggressive brain tumour. Shuktara, a small charity in Calcutta was very important to her and this particular appeal is to raise money for Shuktara's first girls house which we have since heard will be known as Lula's House! This is a wonderful legacy to a wonderful life. Below is Lula's birthday appeal written by her 3 weeks before she died....
"I had intended to have a really spectacular 60th Birthday Party. Then this ghastly brain tumour made its presence known and my party went out of the window. The last 3 months have been a very negative and depressing experience so let's make something positive out of all this and make something good happen!!
Shuktara is a small charity in Calcutta which I have been personally involved with for a long time. Shuktara rescues children with sometimes unbelievable disabillities and changes their lives for ever. Visit http://www.shuktara.net/aboutus.html
If things had been different I had planned to dedicate more of my time to supporting and helping this brave and effective little organisation but...
Big hugs - Lula xxs"
