Story
On 14th February 2018 our beautiful daughter Lucy died suddenly. We are heartbroken and miss her terribly. It is said the brightest lights shine the shortest and this just sums up our Lucy.
I found two recent posts on Lucy’s Twitter - “I love music so much” and “I want to do something with my life.” As her mum I feel it is up to me to do something positive on her behalf and we are going to start doing different things to fundraise for Nordoff Robbins - a charity which was close to Lucy’s heart.
On 7th April 2018 Lucy’s favourite band and friends, Single by Sunday, organised a tribute gig for Lucy at the Garage with the help of Lucy’s dance school and her other favourite bands, Stone Ivy and Beyond Recall. It was an amazing night and all proceeds went to Nordoff Robbins. A massive £1,868.90 was raised so a huge thank you to everyone involved with that!
I would also like to thank my good friend Jenny Haycock in Australia and her work colleagues in the Information and Digital Services Team at Flinders University who raised $300 at a charity lunch on 13th April and chose Nordoff Robbins Australia as the beneficiary.
My own work, NFU Mutual Direct, organised an Open Mic/Karaoke night on 25th May in memory of Lucy. This was another amazing night and we raised a whopping £2,845.16! Thank you to everyone at work for all their help in organising the night and a special thanks to the mastermind behind the whole event, Lynn McLaughlin.
I am delighted to say that Lucy’s brother, Andrew, successfully completed his sponsored sky dive at Strathallan on 3rd June. He loved every minute of it and I am glad to have him safely back on solid ground! He wishes to thank everyone for the generous sponsors and he has raised £1,004 for Nordoff Robbins. Well done Andrew - so proud!
Thank you also to my cousin Pamela Cook and Recycol at North East Scotland College in Aberdeen who have very kindly donated £400 to Nordoff Robbins - we are so grateful for your generosity. Thank you.
Lucy had 2 passions - music and dance. She danced with the Glenda Egan School of Dance from the age of 2 and the annual dance show on 25th June 2018 was dedicated to Lucy. It was a lovely but very emotional tribute to her and we would like to thank Glenda, Sam and Lucy’s dancing friends for all their hard work. We are so touched to hear that Glenda is going to set up an award in Lucy’s name and I will be honoured to present this at the dance show next year.
Thank you so much to our family friends Sue & Ian Dillon and Anne & Mark Hopkins in New South Wales, Australia for donating $200 to Nordoff Robbins Australia in memory of Lucy. We have very fond memories of our holiday to Australia with Lucy in 2011 and really appreciate your generosity.
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to “The Race for Luce” on Sunday 30th September at Rouken Glen Park. We ended up with a total of 132 participants! Both the 5k and the refreshments back at the Park Church Hall could not have gone better and it was so special having so many of Lucy’s family and friends all together. I am delighted to say that a total of £1,337 has been raised. This makes the total amount raised so far in Lucy’s name £7,055 which is just incredible! Again a huge thank you to everyone involved especially to Gayl and Gillian who did the race in Australia and to Maureen and Josephine who did it in Canada.
Due to the amazing feedback we have booked The Race for Luce 2019 which will be held on Sunday 25th August 2019 - details to follow nearer the time!
I would like to thank Kirsty Nisbet, a work colleague of mine and also the daughter of Lucy’s dance teacher Glenda, for donating £50 of her profits from her stall at our Christmas Fayre to Nordoff Robbins. We are so touched by this kind gesture.
Thank you again to my work, NFU Mutual, for donating £200 from the Christmas Raffle to Nordoff Robbins.
A big thank you to Irene and everyone at The Orchard Community Cafe at Orchardhill Church in Giffnock who have very kindly donated £400 to Nordoff Robbins. We are very grateful for all your support.
Lucy and I talked for many years about doing a charity trek along part of the Great Wall of China when she turned 18. I decided to sign up for the trek and did it in May 2019 - the year Lucy would have turned 18. I was delighted that my friend Jenny, who lives in Australia, decided to meet me in Beijing and accompany me on the trek. Lucy would have been so pleased and it was very special for us to take part in this challenge together in her memory. We had the most wonderful experience and we could not have asked for a better group of people to take part in this challenge with and Lucy was very much part of the adventure. I am delighted to say that the total raised from Jenny and I trekking The Great Wall of China is £2,483 taking the overall total of Lucy’s Memorial Fund to £10,115.02.
On 9th June 2019 it was the first cup final of the Lucy Curran Memorial League Cup which was set up by Mark’s football league. A huge thank you to Jim Fowler, Garry Cadden and everyone who competed. I was delighted to present the trophy to the winners - our local team -Giffnock. Congratulations!
The Race for Luce 2019 took place on Sunday 25th August in Rouken Glen Park. 120 signed up for the Race on what turned out to be the hottest August day ever! Thank you also to Gillian who did the Race in Australia, to Lynn and Nina who did it in Inverness and to Sophie who did the Isle of Coll half marathon as her Race! It was a lovely day and we were all ready for the coffee and cake back at the Park Church Hall. As a result of the money raised from the Race for Luce the total of Lucy’s Memorial Fund is now £11,172!
I am afraid due to the Coronavirus outbreak we have had to cancel the big charity gig “Lucy-Fest” which was due to take place on Saturday 8th August 2020 at the Barrowlands.
We are still hoping to hold an event in 2022 to mark the year Lucy would have turned 21 and details will follow in due course.
Thank you so much to everyone for all the continued love and support.
