600,000 people in the UK live with Epilepsy with 87 new cases of Epilepsy each day. Epilepsy is a neurological condition, where an excess influx of electrical activity overloads the brain and results in a seizure also known as a fit. These seizures can result in a complete or partial loss of consciousness. It can in some instances cause a complete loss of muscle control leading to a person falling to the floor and shaking uncontrollably. These patients are at risk of significant injury due to falling.
Epilepsy can impact on every aspect of a persons life. cognitive function, safety, working, driving and living independently and even having children. It also impacts on parents, brothers, sisters etc, it is not nice to watch a loved in a seizure. It is also difficult for siblings as they get a lot less attention growing up as those with epilepsy require a lot of physical and emotional support, often spending a lot of time in hospital. It effects every aspect of the families life as you can see.
Over a third of people with Epilepsy are unable to gain control of their seizures with medications, turning to surgery or devices that may help prevent the influx of electrical activity in the brain.
The Epilepsy association is a charity funded one stop shop for people like me, who have Epilepsy. Providing the tools needed to diagnose not only Epilepsy but seizure type, providing support and counselling for those with epilepsy and families who require respite care for their loved one. It also delivers world class research.
It is such an important resource and needs funding to continue its good work because without it this resource would not be available to those who need it.
