Story
Hi all,
I will be running the Bupa Great North Run on the 16 September 2012 raising money for Kidney Research UK.
As some of you may already be aware, at the end of August 2011 my fiancé Chris decided that we should join a gym. Those of you that know me will realise that I have never been a member of a gym, and the thought alone of joining one terrified me. However, I realised that as I am now in my 30s, and fast-approaching my 40s, my fitness regime needed to change; as to be honest, it was pretty much non-existent in the first place. So with reluctant enthusiasm I joined the gym and started to attend on a regular basis.
Well, in my opinion, the gym is dull. I spent hours at a time on the treadmill, cross trainer, bike, rowing machine and weights, trying to be interested in the music videos/news reports playing on the TV, anything other than looking at the digits on the machine display. (Do you know how slowly ten minutes goes when you are exhausted and feel like death?) Anyway I quickly realised I needed a worthwhile goal, something to achieve, and not just the standard ‘get fit and tone up goal’. So I decided, in order to gain the motivation – and to give myself the much needed ‘kick-up-the-backside’ - I would participate in the Bupa Great North Run 2012, all 13.1 miles of it.
I chose to raise money for Kidney Research UK as my ex-sister in law, Andrea, who I have known for over 15 years (and who remains a good friend), suffered from Kidney failure. At 26 she was lucky enough to find a live donor and had a kidney transplant on the 18 August 2011. This kidney (which for some reason has been named Sydney) should last until Andrea is in her 40s; however, Andrea’s health has significantly improved in even the few months that have followed the operation.
Any donation, however small, will be gratefully received. I am aiming to raise £400 in total.
Many thanks for reading,
Lisa x
