Story
I am running the Hackney Half again on 26th September to raise money for World Wide Cancer Research.
I love this small charity! Their work funds cancer research teams working collaboratively all over the world. Their work has helped thousands of families like ours.
I am running in memory of my mum, Laur and dad, ‘Big Pete’ Huxley-Blythe, who died of cancer in 2016 and 2018, aged 62 and 69.
They both loved sports and being outside, especially in the sea.
My dad was almost obsessive about fitness and was He-man to us when we were little. Sailing, windsurfing, fell-walking, running, weights-training, rescuing contact lenses from the deep end of Fulwood Leisure Centre Pool - he could do it all! Mostly in flip-flops and with an exceptional tan.
Rather inspiringly for me, he ran his best half-marathon time at 42! (At the recollection of which he would give us a classic, ‘my body is a temple!’ followed by him kissing both biceps).
My mum was a truly incredible person and she could run REALLY fast! She loved swimming in the sea, boogie-boarding and games where everyone could join in, like rounders or cricket on the beach.
She was so brave and positive throughout years of treatment. In choosing this charity, I remembered we would talk about the lady in France who had the same type of aggressive cancer as mum and was trialling the same new wonder drug at the same time as her. We would wonder how she was getting on. I so hope it worked for her.
It is impossible to quantify the value of every extra second of time together made possible by the work of the cancer research scientists, medics and supporting staff. I am so, so grateful to them.
I’m over halfway through my training now and things are going well! Hopefully I’ll run the race faster than last time in 2019 and do an ok job at attacking the hills the way my dad used to go on about!
Thank you for any donation you can spare. I hope to raise £275 for this great charity in time for the race on September 26th.
Love Lisa x
