Story

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story and reason for doing this challenge.....

My name is Lindsay Chapman and I’m a 46 year old artist living in Wimborne in Dorset.

Back in 2007 I was involved in a RTA which left me paralysed from the chest down. Up until that point I had been working as a finance analyst at Barclays House in Poole. I was also working part time in the UKSF(R) Royal Signals 63 Squadron.

In an instant my world was turned upside down and I couldn’t begin to imagine living a full and independent life with paralysis.

I spent four and a half months at the spinal rehabilitation centre at Oddstock in Salisbury. I underwent spinal surgery to stabilise my spine and then learnt all of the skills necessary to live an independent life such as dressing, showering and moving about.

The last 15 years have had its highs and lows including some big surgeries but I’ve been fortunate to have great support at home and also in the spinal injury community.

What I’ve learnt is that with the right mind set and support, anything is possible and I am still able to enjoy the things that I love such as sport, cycling, horse riding and travel.

In September this year, myself, my friend Lizzie (who is also paraplegic), my partner Richie and friend Robbie will all be cycling from Milan to Venice over three days… a total of 220 miles..! This has been set up by an organisation called Dream Challenges and once out there we will be part of a group of 30 people with full support crew.

The training for this started back in the winter and we’re now clocking up some decent miles. There have been a few ups and downs along the way, as anticipated but overall it’s going extremely well.

We’re all doing this for our chosen charities and mine and Richie's will be The Steve Bernard Foundation. This charity supports budding athletes with things such as sports equipment so that they are then able to pursue their dreams.

They very kindly supported me when I was selected and then competed at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto. I was successful in winning a gold medal in the 100m wheelchair racing event and this would not have been possible without the support I had including that of this amazing charity.

Any donations and your support will be hugely appreciated... Thankyou xxx
