Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have completed the Cycling Challenge and this is to say a massive thank you for your support for Women v Cancer. With your help I have raised over £3,000.
Kenya was a fantastic experience. Amazing scenery, from lush forests to scorched savannah. Lake Victoria, where we saw Hippo and Fish eagles, to tea and sugar plantations. The very friendly people who shouted encouragement to us and the not so friendly who threw stones and things at us.
I have tremendous admiration for those that cycled up the 26km hill in the mid day heat, I will admit to not getting up the whole distance, but in my defence we had already covered 30km and I finished cycling the rest of the day another 35km which passed one of the athletic high altitude training camps, explained the breathlessness!
Once cycling was finished we had the opportunity to visit an Elephant Orphanage and also go to the Nakuru National Park where we saw rhino, zebra, wildebeest and jackals and a lion. I think for me that the most memorable sight will be when transferring to Nairobi by coach, seeing a herd of zebra running down the side of the road – not in a national park or any fences round them – stunning.
Our group of 90 women were featured on National Kenyan television news as the 5 groups that did the Cycling Challenge in Kenya have together donated £50,000 to the Faraja project a Kenyan cancer support project. Cancer is a disease in Kenya a bit like AIDs used to be completely off limits of discussion this funding will allow them to employ a full time practioner for the first time.
The Women v Cancer Cycle Kenya Challenge has raised over £1.5m for the three charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.
Once again a very big thank you for your support.
Kind regards
Linda
