Story
I am looking for support to help the charity 500miles in their last big fundraiser Big Dinner 2. In three to four years time 500miles will hand over the busy Lilongwe clinic to the Ministry of Health.
As many of you know about the MUMs( Malawi Underprivileged Mothers) charity, you would also have learnt about the work of 500 miles. Olivia the founder and I share the same passion for the people of Malawi .Over the twelve years of MUMs and my regular visits to Lilongwe with friends and family, we visited the 500miles clinic on numerous occasions. Seeing first hand the life changing work being carried out was amazing and humbling. When Olivia was telling me about this last big fundraiser and preparing for the handover to the Ministry of Health, I wanted to support her.
Instead of cooking, as would be my norm to raise money, I am walking. Since lockdown I have walked more and loved it. My sister Julie suggested this would be much more fun to organise, using my two legs to buy prosthetics and orthotics for those in need in Malawi.
An artificial leg in Malawi costs £175 and our target for the day is £1000.
My friends Mo and Leona are walking with me and now the word is out more friends are joining us on the big day! Please feel free to come along to walk all or part of the route.
The date - Saturday 16th October 2021
The place - North Gyle Drive to South Queensferry.
Time - 0930 start- finish 1630 approximately
How long - 15miles - or you can join us along the way, that would be great too.
500 miles helps people in Malawi and Zambia who have impaired mobility or restricted body function as a result of amputation, congenital deformity, illness or accident by supplying and subsidising the supply of prostheses (artificial limbs) and orthoses (braces) for all-comers, but especially the poor. The main focus of 500 miles' work is supporting the development and delivery of sustainable prosthetic and orthotic services in Malawi and Zambia so that these services will last to assist future generations, as well as the people they help today.
