Story
Ron was diagnosed with MDS in April 2018 and unfortunately became transfusion dependant immediately. Having both platelets and blood transfusions every week until he died in January 2020. Ron's condition developed to Aplastic Anaemia which meant that he was constantly being watched for signs of infections or a bleed.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to both during the first few days of January 2020. He was transferred to the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury for palliative care on the 7th January . Whilst there Ron was able to see many members of the family and friends to say his goodbyes and to arrange his Celebration of Life, just as he wanted it, before his passed away on 15th January in a comfortable, dignified and calm environment.
I am grateful for the support of the haematology team at Kings College Hospital, Kent & Canterbury Hospital Cathedral Day Unit and the Pilgrims Hospice.
Ron and I were part of the MDS Support UK Kent Group who have been wonderful to me in continued friendship and support after Ron's passing.
Ron was previously a keen photographer and gardener. So I have taken on two challenges; One to maintain his beloved garden, and the other to learn how to use his camera to take pictures for this challenge of his garden. (Currently doing a course with Kent Adult Education.) Some might say this is not very adventurous but with some mobility challenges myself, plus the current COVID-19 situation, this is my way of raising much needed funds for MDS Support UK. The final 20 photographs will be framed and donated to the raffle at the MDS Support UK Gala event in October 2021.
So please my lovely family and friends give what you can to help me achieve my modest goal. Which I do hope to exceed with your help.
Thank you. Lin
MDS UK is the only charity in the UK providing vital support, information, advice and conducting research solely into Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)- a rare blood cancer where the bone marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. We are a small charity that needs YOUR support!
