Story
In January 2015 our family received the devastating news that our beloved Leigh had Uveal Melanoma. We were all heartbroken but had to stay strong. The following week Leigh was admitted to London's Moorefield Eye Hospital to have surgery, the melanoma was attached to her eye so the consultant explained that by removing the whole eye they could hopefully contain the cancer. The following weeks and months were extremely hard for Leigh and all of us as a family but we were all determined that we were going to help her beat this disease.
Almost 5 years later, after numerous surgeries, special diets, oxygen treatments and much more our beautiful Leigh was taken from us on 27th November 2019. The cancer had spread to her liver.
Our lives were turned upside down, Leigh had left a mum, a husband, a daughter, a son, 2 sisters, a brother, nieces and nephews and many many friends.
Leigh's illness highlighted to us the lack of treatment and research for Ocular melanoma and there is even less treatment and research for Uveal Melanoma. Because of this we have decided to organise a walk at 8am August 20th to walk her journey. This walk will be from London Moorfield eye hospital (where she was diagnosed) to Watling street cemetery, her resting place in Dartford. This is 17.6 miles and roughly 7/8 hours. (Read for day plan below) We are doing this to bring attention to this rare illness and make sure other people do not have to suffer the grievance that we do everyday. Any donations given will be appreciated and will be sent straight to OcuMel Uk to fund vital research to find a cure for Ocular Melanoma.
We invite anybody, whether they knew Leigh or not to come and join us to walk her Journey and donate if possible, because even if we can help one person, that would be amazing. Every little helps, with donations we can make a difference and save peoples lives, because without money there is no research.
Plan for the Day
Although we are going to be starting at London Moorfields I understand that many people may find this unbearingly long considering that children are coming along. In order to make everyone comfortable. We will be creating meeting points with times. This will make sure that people can walk the length they want and be comfortable whether they just decide to do a certain distance they can join us. Even if people decide they can’t walk longer and would rather meet us at the next stop by transport that is okay. This day is about having fun and being memorable in Leighs name.
