Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Next May I will be sailing from Poole to London, on a daunting 5 day trip as part of Barclays Round Britain 2017 Voyage.

We will be sailing with the Jubilee Sailing Trust on one of only two tall ships in the world designed and equipped to be sailed by a crew with widely varied physical abilities, the Lord Nelson.

On this voyage I am privileged to buddy a crew member named Emma Lawton who was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 29. Now 32, Emma is a Parkinson’s campaigner and author who is sharing her story with the many others facing a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Here’s a link to a recent article on her journey with Parkinson’s – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/wellbeing/health-advice/what-its-like-to-have-parkinsons-at-32/

Emma and I have agreed we are up for the challenge and will support each other to experience and master every aspect of ship life, from setting the sails to climbing the masts and steering the ship. Neither Emma nor I have prior sailing experience, and so we will face our own unique challenges, and learn and overcome them together.

With the help of friends, colleagues and family, I need to raise a minimum of £800 to fund this voyage, which Barclays will match £ for £ to cover the cost for both Emma and I to take part in this amazing journey.

One person in every 500 has Parkinson's. That's about 127,000 people in the UK (6.3 million worldwide).

You may even know someone with Parkinson's Disease.

Symptoms and how quickly they progress are different for everyone. There's currently no cure, but drugs and treatments are available to manage many of the symptoms. Parkinson's UK drives better care, treatment and quality of life, so no one has to face Parkinson’s alone. For more information visit: www.parkinsons.org.uk.

Whether you are in the UK, US or travelling the world, if you are able to sponsor me through Just Giving, donations will be quickly processed and passed to Parkinson’s UK; making it
the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Please note, according to HMRC guidelines not every donation is eligible for Gift Aid, including fundraising for this voyage.  If you are UK tax payer, please do not select the Gift Aid box.

Thank you so much for your support.

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.
