Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my Great Ormond Street Hospital site, helping those who cannot help themselves. This is the link to Oscar's page which is what this is all about. www.gosh.org/oscar
Challenge Henley-on-Thamesis at http://www.challengehenley.com/ a full distance triathlon, or Ironman as it is commonly known. It is an extreme event and starts, for me, on Sunday 18th September at 06.50. No. 514.
The swim is a 3.8km loop, from Henley Business School and follows the rowing course along the Thames and back.
1 hour 30 minutes later and out the water. A quick change of gear then onto my push bike for a 180km ride around the Chiltern Hills. Not a circuit but more 3 loops with a turnaround at the edge of the town. I hope it is dry!
Body willing, 8 hours will see me at the next transition. I certainly hope so, because the organisers have a 10 hour 30 minute time out at this stage (which includes the swim time) and at my pace I only have an hour to 'play' with.
For my success, I get to carefully dismount, change my shoes and head off along the tow path of the Thames for 3 loops of 14K, yes a marathon distance. Time? well I hope to do it in under 5 hours, but I need to be back by 22.50, because that is when they turn the lights out!
Why am I putting myself through this in my 55th year? Two reasons, two charities. Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick kids and Help for Heroes. Helping those who cannot help themselves and helping those that have helped us.
I have no ambitions as to how much I would like to raise, that is a matter for those of you reading this. I would just say that to be able to be on the start line for a race like this and be in with a chance of completing it (and still standing at the end) I have had to train for 8~16 hours each week for the last 6 months. I have no intention of not crossing the finishing line!
Thanks for your support.
