Story
We are a team of three (four, if we can persuade someone
else of the female persuasion to join us!) keen cyclists, in the prime of our lives, taking on the challenge of riding 500 miles in relay over three days, in order to raise much needed funds for the AAIR Charity. If we don’t get a fourth rider, the strain of navigating, riding, finding lost riders and covering the distance in daylight hours will be enormous!
More details are here: https://challengeadventurecharities.org.uk/content/massif-challenge-2016
Our team goes under the name of ‘the Massif Stomachs’.
We are:
Laurence Dunn – team leader and owner of a Massif Stomach. Veteran of 6 previous Challenge events. Also a trustee of the AAIR charity (see below)
Hazel Gibbs –talented organiser of numerous Challenge events in previous years. Coffee eater and former Pink Lady.
Mike Letheren – a keen cyclist but a Challenge virgin
The ride will start at St Malo, France and finish 500 miles and three days later in the Massif Central. Long and arduous mountain clients are expected (hence the name ‘Massif’!), which will tax us to our limits.
The team are covering all the costs of the event themselves, so EVERY PENNY you donate will go to the charities (half goes to Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation and half to the AAIR charity).
So please, give as much as you can - no amount is too small.
About the Asthma, Allergy, Inflammation and Research
Charity (‘AAIR’).
The AAIR charity raises funds for the world-renowned asthma, allergy and respiratory research department, at The University of Southampton Faculty of Medicine. The funds are then distributed in the form of grants to researchers in the department, who are developing new treatments and cures for airways diseases.
Most people will know someone who suffers from an asthma, allergy or respiratory problem.
AAIR is vital to the department’s work, helping to prime-pump new research projects, which allows researchers to develop ways to give patients relief from what can be debilitating, or life-threatening, symptoms.
Since it was founded some 23 years ago, AAIR has raised over £5m, helping the department grow from a fledgling unit to an internationally recognized and respected centre of excellence.
The department is credited with many achievements and breakthroughs - from helping discover an important asthma gene to pioneering new treatments.
