Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

I'll be honest, last year, I spent the majority of it feeling like I was a spectator. Like my body was just doing its thing, and my mind was elsewhere. Like I couldn't quite connect the two, even though I was trying.

You can put it down to stress, to sadness, to the realisation that life, although wonderful, beautiful and absolutely ridiculous, can also be incredibly painful, and incredibly short. That YOLO is more than just a catchy phrase and if you have the opportunity, the means, the sheer blind courage to - you should probably do something good with it.

For me, I found my cause, in all the disconnection. To help those suffering from Parkinson's, and their families.

There truly is not enough support for people with Parkinson’s and their families from the hospitals and doctors. There’s not enough care, or resources, or people that can break it down and help people to figure out how to cope - Which is why charities like Parkinson’s UK are so important. I certainly wish I knew about them sooner.

That's why this year, I'm taking on FIVE challenges, all to raise money for Parkinson's UK.

They are:

The Reebok Spartan Sprint: At 5k and with 20+ obstacle courses this is (surprisingly) the shortest Spartan Sprint that they offer. It’s aimed at challenging anyone who wants to get off the sofa and see what they’re capable of.

The Tough Mudder Half: Also a 5k, but with only 13 obstacles to overcome. It’s not as hard as the full Tough Mudder (it doesn’t include the ice or the electricity – thankfully), but is set to challenge that little voice in your head that say’s “I can’t”.

The Color Obstacle Rush: Another 5k, but with 20 obstacles, 8 colour stations, 25 music zones, 'colour from the sky' and much more! Ok so this isn't the most challenging course, but it'll be a good mid-ground between being a spartan and a gladiator!

The Gauntlet Games 10k: At 10k this is one of the longest obstacle course that I’ve signed up to- and the one that seems like the most fun! There are gladiators to steer you off course and to be honest, it looks like an extended course from total wipe out rather than a challenge in physical fitness, but we'll see!

The Rough Runner: Another 10k! This time the obstacles are inspired by all those game shows we love – Takeshi’s Castle, Wipeout, Gladiator, Ninja Warrior and more! It should be a lot of fun, and also make for quite the challenge!

I’ve created a training plan to go alongside the challenge; complete with yoga and pilates class, Spartan sprint warm-ups, obstacle course practice, gym sessions and barre core workouts.

For someone who couldn't run for 10 minutes without stopping in October, it's definitely not something that's going to come easy for me. It's a challenge - but one that I'm ready to take on... As soon as my bust eardrum stops destroying my balance and making me dizzy! - I'm ready to put the work in, and I'm ready to do that for Parkinson's Uk.

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.
