Story
Dementia affects people in many ways, depending on the type of dementia. The impact can be physical, emotional, and psychological, and can also profoundly change the practicalities of everyday life. This impact is not only to those suffering from the disease but also their family and surrounding friends as they learn how to care for and support the individuals’ increasing needs.
Dementia UK is a charity which works to help support the families of those living with Dementia by training ‘Admiral Nurses’ who are Dementia specialists trained to help manage the complex requirements of the patient and help the family deal with this, whilst also advising other healthcare professionals.
Admiral Nurses help people living with dementia to stay independent for longer and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days.
This is something I feel very passionate about, holding a close connection to the disease and seeing how it has affected my family I want to help fundraise as much as possible to allow for the training of these healthcare specialists to ensure a quality of life is maintained for all, and those living with Dementia do so with the care and dignity they deserve.
I have therefore signed up to the Great North Run 2023, this will be my second half marathon and my first time running the 13.1miles from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to South Shields. I am excited for the challenge and determined to do everyone proud so any donations will be gratefully received. I am also going to do a ‘Time across the line’ competition so feel free to leave a comment with the time you think I’ll finish in to be in with the chance of winning a prize (to be announced nearer to the race), closest time wins!
