My Story
Why am I doing it? I completed my first 10km in January after last year struggling to doing any sort of long distance running. Eventhough, I found the 10km really tough I strangely enjoyed it and set my sights on a new challenge. One of my family suggested to me what about a half marathon. Initially the idea scared me having to run 13.1 miles but I decided I am going to give this a go.
It will be my first half marathon and it takes place on 9th October. I choose together for short lives because as a teacher I have a close connection with children. The work they do for young people with life limiting and life shortening conditions is inspirational and I know the money raised will really help make a difference.
Little bit about the charity
The charity speaks out for children and young people who are expected to have short lives. Their vision is for children and young people with life shortening conditions to have as fulfilling lives as possible. There are currently 49,000 young people living in the UK with health conditions which are either life shortening or life threatening and the number is rising. That's one in every 270 children.
Together for short lives speaks up for those whose voices are not heard or are simply ignored. They want to amplify the concerns of children and young people, their families and those who support them.
These are some of their main aims :
- To ensure every child has access to palliative care in the setting of their or their family's choice whenever they need it.
- Every child and their family has access to palliative services including children's hospices, which are sustainable and fairly funded.
- Every child and their family gets a short break if they need one.
- There are a sufficient number of skilled, competent professionals who are able to care for children with complex and life shortening conditions.
- To ensure support to families of children who die with life-shortening conditions is improved.
- To ensure families receive help from the state to help mitigate the financial impact of caring for a child.
All donations will be going towards supporting Together for Short Lives.
