Story
My wonderful Dad, Derek Newnes, passed away in 2016 whilst in the amazing care of the staff at Severn Hospice in Shrewsbury. From the moment he was admitted the staff were simply amazing, to all of us - not just Dad. Being able to stay overnight and remain with him throughout his final days was so important to us and we will be forever thankful for this. Dad was kept comfortable, free from pain and had the most peaceful death - all down to the amazing care he received.
Running the London Marathon has always been on my bucket list! 2024 is the year I turn 40 so it seemed fitting to pick this year to be my ‘marathon year’ and as a way to remember my wonderful Dad by giving something back for the care he received at Severn Hospice.
I must admit … when I submitted my application I didn’t think for a minute I would be chosen, so receiving the call was a big surprise ….. but a very good surprise! This will be my first marathon ….. but thoughts of Dad, who was always my proudest supporter, will keep me going.
Severn Hospice provides specialist care and emotional support for families in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales living with an incurable illness. All care is provided for free, but it is not without cost - they have to raise £2 for every £3 that is spent.
