Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 2015, we received the devastating news that John had been diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour. A condition from which he sadly passed away on 22nd November 2016 after an incredibly brave and dignified fight against his illness.
During John’s treatment, we discovered the gardens for neurological patients outside McKissock Ward at Atkinson Morley Wing, part of St George’s Hospital Trust, Tooting. The gardens were commissioned by famous brain surgeon Henry Marsh to help with patient recovery but were in need of some TLC.
With the agreement of the hospital, John and I adopted the garden and with a team of friends started to maintain it. We both agreed that we should start a charity to maintain and improve the McKissock Ward garden. In addition to this, we passionately wanted to support the amazing work at the Atkinson Morley Wing in the treatment of brain tumours.
We were also passionate about supporting the incredible work of Tim Jones, Neurosurgeon, St George’s Hospital Trust. The charity’s first major project is to raise money for a state-of-the-art microscope, not available through NHS funding. This will allow more of a brain tumour to be removed during surgery prolonging a patient’s life.
Ultimately we want to support research into this fatal cancer which receives only 1% of all government cancer research funding and has an average life expectancy of just 15 months. Sadly, many more young people are being diagnosed with malignant brain tumours. Brain tumours kill more under 40’s than any other cancer.
On the 18th April 2018, myself and some of my friends are putting on our hiking boots in John's memory to trek the Great Wall of China.
My knees are in terrible shape, but I promise to do my very best for the charity, which will probably mean crawling up!!
All donations, however small will be much appreciated, you are all so kind and I hope one day I can repay all your kindness.
Thanks to you all for your amazing support.
