Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. The Romsey Rotary Club Trust Fund coordinates all donations to Test Valley walkers’ chosen charities.
The PSP Association (PSPA) is a national charity providing support and information to people living with two degenerative neurological terminal illnesses, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Cortico Basal Degeneration (CBD), while funding research into treatments and ultimately hopes to find a cure. PSP is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s but in reality is it’s “nasty cousin”. They are both horrible...
Life expectancy from diagnosis is approx 7yrs. Dad broke the records and endured this for 15. He was remarkably stoical given the life sentence that fate dealt him - not quite the happy retirement that was envisaged! The hardest thing for me was his loss of speech and increasing inability to communicate, but PSP also robbed him of being able to walk; bathe; swallow (affected eating, drinking and taking medication); dress; being able to live at home; and ultimately his dignity. He was in a wheelchair for his last several years and died in Feb 2012. It is not a well known condition and there is no cure.
The PSPA aims to improve the lives of everyone affected by PSP and CBD. They rely entirely on voluntary donations, and that's why we need your support.
I am walking with a friend of 30+ years from boarding school as we both have a parent affected by things we'd like to support - PSP and Parkinsons. We did a similar fundraising walk in 2018 as part of a larger group; the Jurassic Challenge. Those of you who know me, will realise that I am not a phys monster or a gym bunny!!! As far as walking goes, it's usually to the pub and back: I like "flat" hills (!) and so several miles present a real challenge. I found the Jurassic Challenge pretty tough going, so I am hoping that the laughs with Bridget as we walk through a beautiful local area by the River Test and doing something in memory of Dad (and for her mum) will carry me through!
