More than 90% of the population in
Southern Sudan currently live on less than 1 dollar a day.
Less than 2% of children complete their Primary
School Education.
There is one teacher for every thousand pupils.
Last year I went to see Emmanuel Jal speak of the
difficulties that he, and thousands of children in Sudan, faced as child
soldier's in the civil war. As a Primary School teacher, I really believe that
everyone has the right to safety, education and a childhood. Although
Emmanuel's life story was difficult to listen to, I felt inspired by his
commitment towards empowering children in Sudan through the gift of education.
Emmanuel's struggle for survival has inspired him
to set up GUA Africa - a charity which is committed towards helping young
people overcome the effects of war and poverty through providing an education
to children and young adults who would otherwise be denied such opportunity.
Over the past few months, I have been training hard
for the Great Edinburgh Run. This has been a serious undertaking as (I'm sure
some of you know) I am not a natural born runner. My aim to raise money for GUA
Africa, has helped keep me focused on my training and will help keep my feet
moving on May 2nd. While I know running 10K will be a real challenge, raising
money for GUA Africa means it is one I am not willing to fail.

Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated, will
keep me motivated and will make a real difference to the lives of children in
Southern Sudan.
Many Thanks,
Laura
