We provide inclusive cricket programmes to empower young people facing inequality

Story

On the 7th October 2012, I will be running the Chester Marathon to raise awareness of the Lady Taverners - a wonderful charity that does so much for young people with special needs. What better way for a man to help than running 26 miles in a big pink suit!!

The Lady Taverners is a vital and dedicated fundraising arm of The Lord's Taverners. Founded in 1987, we have since raised over £12 million in our 25 years. The Lord's Taverners is famous for its charitable giving to cricket but we tend to focus our fundraising on specially adapted minibuses and sport and recreation for young people with special needs.

We owe our formation to Baroness Thatcher, who set the all-male club a problem! Traditionally, each Prime Minister had been made an honorary member of The Lord's Taverners. As this was not possible, The Lady Taverners was formed with Baroness Thatcher awarded the title of Honorary Lady Taverner No.1.

She was joined by 23 others with famous cricket names such as Ann Subba Row, Betty Surridge, Ann Barrington, Rachael Heyhoe Flint, Marjorie Gover, plus show biz personalities including Joan Morecambe and Judith Chalmers. Now over 1000 strong, we continue to draw members from the world of show business, television and the corporate world. In the first year, we raised £6,000 and now that figure is rapidly approaching £1m.
