Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Cohort 30's Just Giving Page.

As new officers to Lincolnshire Police we wanted to take on the challenge of taking part in fundraising events in order to raise money for the charity PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) UK who aim to raise awareness of PTSD in 3 main areas - its causes, symptoms and the treatments available. Three areas that are of vital importance to those suffering with the condition.

We as a Cohort not only want to show our support to PTSD UK but to anyone that has suffered PTSD in their professional or person life. It is important to us that we also raise awareness for Post-Traumatic stress Disorder, no matter the trauma that caused it, as support and education on this condition is just as important as raising money to help assist with the aims of the charity.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It is estimated that 50% of people will experience a Trauma at some point in their life and although the majority of people exposed to traumatic events only experience some short-term distress, around 20% of people who experience a trauma go on to develop PTSD, which is one in 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives.

In a study looking at people with PTSD, over half of the sample - 56.4% reported some aspect of suicidality, a figure that is significant greater than reported within the general population.

Women with PTSD are almost 7 times more likely to die by suicide and males with PTSD are 4 times more likely to end their life.

It is estimated that up to 70% of people with PTSD in the UK do not receive any professional help at all.

These points are a few of many alarming statistics that highlight the prevalence and seriousness of this disorder and the effects the disorder has on an individual. It also shows the lack of professional help received by individuals - this may be due to being unaware they are suffering, unaware of treatments and support to help them recover, misdiagnosis and simply being unable to articulate how they feel. Which is why the aims of PTSD UK are so important, PTSD - its causes, symptoms and the treatments available. Three areas that are of vital importance to those suffering with the condition.
