Story

Welcome to our JustGiving Page! It may be just Jasmijn on the bike, but the crew is just as important to make this a successful record attempt.

LEJOG is a classic cycle tour covering the length of Great Britain, from Land's End in the tip of Cornwall to John o' Groats in the most northeasterly point of Scotland. It is also the blue riband distance among long distance record-breaking in the UK. In 1954, Eileen Sheridan set a new LEJOG record of 2 days, 11 hours and 7 minutes, that stood for decades. In 2013, Jasmijn had the pleasure to hear Eileen speak about her record at a local event in Isleworth.. and a seed was planted..

The current record for LEJOG is 52 hours and 45 minutes and is held by Lynne Biddulph (nee Taylor). It has stood unchallenged ever since Lynne set the record in 2002. Whilst at it, the plan is to keep going for the 1,000 miles record which is also held by Lynne and stands at 64 hours and 38 minutes: a distance and time on a bicycle most people wouldn’t even dream of covering by car…

It won’t be easy, but with the right preparation, strong team ethos, a positive mind-set, and a bit of help from the weather gods, we hope to set two new records in either July or September 2018 (wind/weather permitting).

Jasmijn raised money for Cancer Research UK twice before: the first time in 2010 when she cycled 100 miles (the furthest distance ever for her back then!) in an fundraising event organised by a client who used cycling to regain fitness after esophagus cancer (but sadly died 3 months after the event as the cancer returned), and again in 2013 when she participated in her first 24-hour race (at Le Mans) and won the solo women's category.

In February 2017, Jasmijn and half of her crew members spent nearly 3 days in her house to set a new virtual reality Zwift Distance Record of 1,135.9 miles in 70 hours and 11 minutes (of which 62 hours and 4 minutes were spent on the bike). The successful Zwift record attempt was held as training and preparation for the September LEJOG and 1000 miles record attempt.

By the end of the first (and sadly abandoned) LEJOG record attempt in September 2017, a total of £3,695 was raised for Cancer Research UK. Many of you have kindly donated before, but let's see if we can add a little more to that fundraising target this time.

Unfortunately, most of our lives are touched by cancer. Hopefully our joint efforts can make a small but valuable contribution to research to get closer to finding cures for cancer.
