My husband, Jerry, was diagnosed with mouth cancer in February 2014, he had a radical neck dissection and lymph nodes removed, floor of mouth removed and rebuilt from his arm and part of his tongue removed, followed by radiotherapy.
In June 2015 he was diagnosed with Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw which means he suffers ongoing infections through a fistula. He will need to have surgery to build a new jaw at some point in the future.
The side effects have been life changing. If diagnosed early, less surgery and treatment is needed.
This is why every day for 60 days until the end of November I've accepted the challenge to undertake the 10km Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk for The Mouth Cancer Foundation.
