Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Liz Sedgwick and I are cycling 112km each to raise awareness of the 112 women who are killed each year, that's around 2 women a week, from domestic violence.

The bike ride also increases the awareness of domestic violence which affects 1 in 4 women, regardless of socio-economic background and although only a minority of incidents of domestic violence are reported to the police, the police still receive one call about domestic violence for every minute in the UK.

I've been involved with Standing Together Against Domestic Violence since 2007 and this is the third year that I'm cycling, although the first time I'm doing the full 112km- a decision I wouldn't have made without the support of Liz.

This charity means a lot to me, because their approach and innovations have made significant and much needed changes to how these crimes are reported and processed through the criminal justice system - but more importantly how the victims and their families are supported by all local services e.g. health, housing – safeguarding them from further harm.

The charity also trains front line services to better identify victims of violence so that intervention and help can be delivered as soon as possible to the victim and their family.

The charity now in its 14th year and it continues to push boundaries and has recently become the national lead in conducting domestic homicide reviews, helping to identify missed opportunities of intervention and to learn lessons so that further homicides can be prevented.

Liz and I have to confess that we have done very little training, but we are committed to completing the ride, even if it takes us 7 hours and a lot of ibuprofen. But we do need your support and encouragement - also as it’s my birthday very very soon, I’m happy to forego presents for donations instead.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
