Kris's Alzheimer Memory Walk

 

At the young age of 59 my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This was 3 years ago. This once independent and career focused lady has become a different person; the disease is slowly taking away her dignity in front of my very eyes. She can no longer take care of herself, wash, clean, dress or even eat without the help of her carers. These seemingly simple tasks which many of us take for granted are a constant struggle for my mother and those who care for her. I watch as Alzheimer's destroys the strong, driven employee, the loving mother, the playful Gran, and the loyal and dear friend she was to so many people.

I have organised a sponsored Memory Walk on Sunday 20 November 2011. Those taking part will meet at 10am outside Bellahouston Leisure Centre, Glasgow to begin this 10k event. Everyone participating is raising funds to help support Alzheimer Scotland's services across Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire and I need your help to raise awareness of this event and raise money to support those living with dementia.
 
This disease which is currently incurable affects one in ten people over the age of 65. Together we can fight this disease, as we do with so many others! However until now dementia is a disease we can neither cure nor slow.  Those diagnosed with dementia face a long and often lonely battle through this progressive illness.  Sadly it is still the 6th largest cause of death in the UK. Dementia care and support costs the Government 20 billlion per year and yet many people still receive an inadequate level of support; with only 40 per cent of those living with dementia receiving a diagnosis. Sadly Alzheimer's receives only 3 per cent of research funding available to other causes of death.  Many charitable organisations have reported a reduction in fatality rates, however the death rate for Alzheimer's disease has risen 66% in the last 8 years.

As a carer and a son I beg for your support. Please lend your voice so that those affected by this disease have the support, care and dignity they deserve. Alzheimer Scotland believes that no-one should go through dementia alone - with your help we can make this a reality!

Over 82,000 people are affected by dementia throughout Scotland and this figure is set to increase to 164,000 by 2036. However your support will help Alzheimer Scotland continue to research this disease and provide support services for those affected.
