Knit a Tulip for ME - raising awareness and supporting ME charities
ME/CFS is a painful and debilitating condition that has no cause or cure. Despite it affecting 250,000 people in the UK there is little understanding or support.
We are a group of mums who all have children suffering from the illness.
On the 1st June 2014 we set up Knit a Tulip for ME in an effort to raise awareness of ME/CFS by knitting 25,000 tulips to represent the number of children suffering from this illness in the UK, though the actual figure probably far exceeds our current target!
In our first year we supported, exclusively, AYME (The Association of Young People with ME) and on the 14th May this year AYME displayed our tulips in London at the Doublet Tree Hotel, Chelsea.
Why tulips? We were inspired by a piece of writing by Emily Perl Kingsley entitled 'Welcome to Holland', if you wish to read it, it can be found here www.our-kids.org/archives/Holland
To date we have over 11,000 knitted/crocheted tulips but our aim is to reach that elusive 25,000!
We are supported by over 1,000 followers on our Facebook page - Knit a Tulip for ME www.facebook.com/knitatulipforME and we have over 200 knitters/crochetiers.!
This year we extend our support to:
The Tymes Trust
Smile for ME
Invest in ME
as well as continuing to support AYME..
Our hope is that the finished tulips - all 25,000 of them - will be displayed in a site of prominence, to highlight the plight of young ME sufferers and their families - with smaller regional displays planned around the country, where possible.
Fundraising for our charities is by donating on these pages for AYME and Invest in ME.
To donate to Tymes Trust or Smile for ME please go to our MyDonate team page www.mydonate.bt.com/teams/knitatulipforme
Fundraising is also achieved through sponsorship of our knitters.
Please join our campaign by sharing this and our Facebook page. We want to raise awareness of ME and the profile of ME charities and we would like to raise funds for them too.
