Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust has been a long standing friend and supporter of Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda. As the Chairman of the Trust I have pledged to raise some funds for Kiwoko Hospital. In this time of lockdown, charity events are cancelled, only essential travel is permitted and any feat risking injury should be avoided to protect our health service. So a home based challenge of discomfort, of giving up my bed and normal foods is what I am doing. A rice, beans and fruit based diet together with every night spent on a mat on the floor for the month of March will be my way to shine a light on the needs of Ugandan's and their healthcare. Check out the costs below and make a difference to the lives of patients at the Hospital.

Kiwoko Hospital is situated in a jungle area of Luweero, 50 miles north of the  Ugandan capital Kampala. It was started by Dr Ian Clarke, a GP from North Down in 1987, after the civil war in Uganda. Currently hospital funding comes from patient fees (30%), the government of Uganda (8%) and from external donors (62%). The hospital has over 200 beds (medical, surgical, paediatric, and maternity), a neonatal intensive care unit, an outpatient department, a pharmacy, a radiology department and a laboratory.
There is a major focus on preventative health care with community health education, sanitation and immunisation a priority. Kiwoko Hospital also runs a nurse and laboratory training schools. At present the hospital has 232 enrolled nursing students undertaking the nationally prescribed 2 ½ year course. It also has 57 students taking the 2 year laboratory assistants course. The hospital employs around 400 clinical and non-clinical staff in areas similar to most hospital functions in the Ulster Hospital Dundonald.

Kiwoko Hospital is hugely reliant on outside support. The global Covid-19 pandemic has made the funding of the Hospital extremely difficult. The lack of fundraising events during Covid-19 has led to the hospital running costs exceeding the received donations.

This is an opportunity to donate or purchase specific items to help keep the vital work of the Hospital alive. You could make a massive difference!!

You could purchase:

One box of 20 Paracetamol tablets              £0.52

One Malaria test                                               £0.62

Use of an Oxygen concentrator per day       £1.10

One Xray                                                             £3.44

To see a doctor in Out Patients                      £0.96

To see a surgeon in Out Patients                   £1.70

For a mother to have a Normal Delivery       £7.80

For a mother to have a Caesarian Section   £34.00

You can see how easy it is to transform lives for good and provide care for patients who cannot afford their own hospital care. Change a life today!
