Story

About three months ago (May 2014) Guillain Barre Syndrome paralysed me. Staff in ICU at Southmead Hospital saved my life. Their hard work then led to me, several weeks later, breathing unaided and having my trachy removed. I was moved to a ward where on 18th June i fed myself and by the 20th, with enormous effort from OTs and physios i could use a wheelchair for short periods. Sensation has gradually returned. On 1st July I was transferred to Frenchay BIRU where an amazing team have kept me motivated and taught me to walk again and complete all sorts of tasks independently that we take for granted in everyday life.
Today, 27th August, I came home.
I am so grateful to all of the hospital and rehab staff who have helped me on this journey and to the friends and family who have kept me going.
GAIN supported me ad my friends and family by providing us with information. The charity also fund research into the condition and are working to raise awareness. I will continue to benefit from their work as my recovery continues at home.
