Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 2003 I broke my left leg so badly that I was told I wouldn't walk properly again. I've since proved that prognosis wrong and now actively participate in the sports I love, except for one - because I have to avoid impact sports I can no longer run, and so I've had to sit and simply watch in awe as many friends take part in marathons, half marathons, triathlons and ultra running events and have raised £1,000's for good causes.
Well my turn has eventually come because in February 2019 I shall be participating in a 100 mile kite challenge to cross the open ocean from Little Cayman to Grand Cayman under the power of just a kite.
I've been a keen kitesurfer since 2002 and it was one of the sports I was desperate to get back to after I broke my leg. It took me 2 years of gruelling daily physiotherapy sessions to do so, but I did it. Then in 2017 I took up kite hydrofoiling and discovered my new passion, so much so that I'll be using a hydrofoil for the challenge.
The challenge is a huge one. It's across 100 miles of open ocean meaning that we'll be facing 4 to 6 foot high waves. Provided I can maintain an average speed of 20 Knots I've estimated that the trip will take me 4.5 hours, non stop. However, being realistic, taking crashes and water stops into account it's going to take me longer!
By the time the event comes around I'll be 57 and probably the oldest competitor taking part. But I'm setting out on this adventure to prove that my age is no barrier and I'll be posting regular updates on my preparations which will include getting into the best physical shape I can and training for long hours on the water honing my currently less than impressive hydrofoiling skills.
As we all know cancer is a terrible disease that doesn't discriminate but when it's a kid who receives the diagnosis it's simply just cruel.
Since I learnt of Olly's diagnosis I've been humbled by his response and the response of the many friends who have come together under the banner of Team Olly to help him make a difference. I hope I can now do my part to help too. I know my target is a big one; but I'm not chasing big donations because lots of small donations will get me there too. I'm not seeking attention for myself, I just hope you find this challenge interesting and will follow me all the way to the start line and through to the finish, because knowing I have your support will make this a lot easier.
