Story
UPDATE: Having had to make do with a virtual half marathon last year, I had another go at doing the 'real thing' in October 2021. Half marathons and dementia are just as tough one year on. I truly appreciate for the generous support I had last year - any further donations very, very gratefully received. Diolch yn fawr / thank you xx
So the Oxford Half Marathon was sadly cancelled this year. But I've decided to try and keep up the training and give it a go anyway in late October to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society.
The least athletic member of a family of athletes, I'm training hard whilst trying not to disgrace the family name. That's me in the photo, with my lovely dadcu, who had dementia, but who always loved us all the same.
Dementia is really brutal. The current pandemic is hard for all of us in different ways, but particularly cruel for those with dementia and their families. Lack of contact with each other is heartbreaking, and putting life on hold means something very different when you have a progressive illness.
The Alzheimer's Society is particularly brilliant because it focuses both on finding a cure for this horrible illness, and on supporting people with dementia today. Both are needed to make the present and the future more bearable.
Thank you so much for reading my story. If you are able to support that's great, but I really understand that might not be something you can afford right now. Cheer me on anyway.
Thank you very much / diolch yn fawr,
Kerry x
