Fundraising for Catching Lives
Story
From 16th October 2020 the Kent Law Society will be raising money for Catching Lives, based in Canterbury, Kent.
Homelessness does not discriminate. The homeless figures in Kent are appalling with last year seeing almost 5,000 people confirmed to be without a home. Any money raised by us this year will have a huge impact on the lives of those who are not fortunate enough to have a safe place to sleep or access to food/water.
Crisis have described the figures for homeless deaths in Kent as “heartbreaking” with 17 deaths reported across Kent in 2018 (Office of National Statistics). Canterbury had the fifth highest rate of homeless deaths in the country in 2017 with homeless people dying at twice the national rate. The average life expectancy for the general population is 77, for a male rough sleeper it's 47 and for a woman, 43.
Catching Lives is an independent charity aimed at supporting the rough sleepers, homeless and vulnerably housed in Canterbury and East Kent; those who have, for many reasons, fallen through the gaps in society and feel they have nowhere else to turn.
Their vision is of a society where all are included and all, no matter how disadvantaged, can make a contribution. Catching Lives works towards ending the harm caused to individuals, families and the community, by homelessness, rough sleeping and insecure housing. They do this by offering immediate respite at their project in Canterbury: the Canterbury Open Centre. In addition to this, they work with clients to help them to tackle any issues that they may have, get access to suitable accommodation and find the motivation to take steps towards personal recovery and independent living.
