Fundraising for Breast Cancer Now
Story

This April, I will be running the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon in memory of my lovely mum, Agnes, who passed away in August 2016 from secondary breast cancer.
My mum was very passionate about Breast Cancer Now because she believed from her own personal experience - having been diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2012 - that its work and research makes a genuine difference to the lives of those living with breast cancer. During her time as President of Ilkley Soroptimists, she helped to organise many fundraising events and activities in order to raise awareness of Breast Cancer Now and its live-saving research.
Before her death, my mum expressed a wish to have a collection box at her funeral so that people could donate to Breast Cancer Now in lieu of buying flowers. We raised over £700 from her funeral alone - a feat I know she would have been very proud of. It is this that inspired me to apply for a Breast Cancer Now London Marathon charity place; I want to continue my mum’s charitable work and raise money for a cause that she passionately believed in. I also just want to make her proud.
My mum was a remarkable woman. She was a mother, grandmother and friend, full of fun, wit, wisdom and warmth. Her company made everyone around her feel brighter and safe, and she inspired unconditional love in those closest to her. She was admired by all, and known throughout the community as an incredibly kind woman who was dedicated to helping others, even during the last few years of her life.
We had our mum for four precious years after her initial diagnosis. I want to raise money for Breast Cancer Now so that more people can have extra time with those they dearly love.
It was an honour to be her daughter, and it will be an honour to raise money in her name for this wonderful charity.
Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in the UK. 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, and 1,000 people die from it every month. Breast Cancer Now is the UK's largest breast cancer research charity, and it is their ambition that by 2050, no one will die from breast cancer.
