Story
This June I will be volunteering in Durban, which is on the east coast of South Africa, for three months. I will be working alongside local young adults in developing countries and learning first hand about poverty and injustice and discover ways to help tackle it. The province I will be working in is Kwazulu Natal. There are a lot of people that have HIV and possibly not getting treatment for it which means a lot of them are sick and unable to work. A large number of people within those communities are orphans and being looked after by grandparents, uncles, aunties and neighbours.
Areas of volunteering I can be involved in while out in South Africa are:
1) Visiting children and families to see what help they need to become less vulnerable.
2) Developing health campaigns for schools, organisations an communities.
3) Running assemblies or lessons in schools about various topics that affect their lives.
4) Sharing skills with the organisations I will be working with. .
I have created a blog where I will be documenting my journey and where you can find out about ICS and Tearfund. http://threemonthsinsouthafrica.weebly.com/blog
All the money donated will contribute to the ICS programme so that a further 10,000 young people from the UK can volunteer with in country volunteers on projects in the developing world and fight poverty.
