Story
Take two... I was so gutted not to be able to run the marathon this year (2023) due to a broken rib, however I'm back training ready to smash this in April 2024!
As some of you may know, my youngest; Willow, lives with Tourette’s Syndrome. It is something that I knew very little about until Willow started to tic. At one stage the tics were so bad that Willow would need to be collected from school to ensure her safety and the safety of those around her.
Tourette’s is often misunderstood and occasionally the punchline to a joke but as a family we have seen just how debilitating, humiliating and heartbreaking it can be. From missing so much time at school to having to have dental treatment under gas and air, from being called a fake to being ignored by medical professionals; Tourette’s syndrome is certainly not a funny little illness that makes people swear and it has taken a toll on Willow’s confidence and sense of self and on us all as a family.
We are lucky, with family support we were able to get a private diagnosis, medication (which does help currently but is not a perfect solution) and she’s a smart and strong cookie with a world class sense of humour and so much love to give so will ultimately succeed in life. Others aren’t so lucky.
Tourette’s Action is a charity that I’ve turned to time and time again so I’m running the London Marathon as part of their team, to raise much needed funds, awareness and most of all to show my Willow how very, very proud of her I am.
