Katie's runs again!

Great Birmingham Run 2022 Half Marathon · 1 May 2022 ·
I've decided to fundraise again for the wonderful small charity so close to my heart.
Last year I ran 5k every day of February, finishing on 28th February to mark exactly one year since my first operation for Thyroid Cancer. So this year I wanted to mark it again- Now here we go, half marathon training is on!
Many people will already know my story but here's a quick recap.
At 26 years old I found a lump in my neck, my sister thought the shadow of it was dirt, haha! Went to the doctors, had a few scans, tests and biopsies, and within a couple of weeks I was in surgery having it removed as they couldn't conform if it was nasty of not. Fast forward, recovery was hard and slow and within two weeks it was confirmed. 4x4cm cancerous tumour growing in my thyroid gland. Next op booked and treatment plan discussed. Waiting for the next operation and treatment was rough, just wondering if the cancer was spreading. Second surgery April 1st (unfortunately not a joke), when covid was suddenly a thing and I had to do it all again but alone- not fun. Recovery again blah blah blah. My radiotherapy, RAI treatment was then booked in for September 1st and on that day I also got a new nephew- definitely a strange mix of emotions. That week was horrible, boring and lonely but it ended and the result was positive. October 1st I received the ALL CLEAR! Hurrah!
Fast forward to now. I am well and happy. No thyroid life has it's own challenges. Having a lack of thyroxine in your body has consequences, which we try to tackle with medication and regular check ups. The scar is still a huge issue for me personally but that's fine. This is my new normal and I am ok with that.
