Story
Until 2010, I didn't know much about autism. My daughter Isobel is so many things: beautiful, clever, cheeky, creative, brave, kind... She is also on the autism spectrum.
Over the last seven years, the National Autistic Society has provided amazing support to our family. They've helped us to understand what autism is, and what it means, via their EarlyBird course for parents of under 5s. Their Education Rights Service has helped us to navigate the world of Statements of Special Educational Need, Education & Healthcare Plans, provision and inclusion. The local South Buckinghamshire branch provides information, activities and events, helping us to connect with other families nearby.
I have no doubt that Isobel, William, Andrew and I will continue to access NAS services, and that our family will benefit from their campaigns to make the world a better place for people with autism.
I'm running the London Marathon to say thank you to the NAS. I was on the reserve list and a place became available in late January, so I have 14 weeks to get myself ready: that's ages, right....?
I'm taking on the biggest physical challenge of my life to raise money for the NAS because I want to make sure their services are readily available for other families and that they continue to advocate on behalf of children and adults with autism.
