Story
For the last 3.5 years I've been working for Samaritan's Purse Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART). Whilst working with them I have been deployed around the world to disaster and conflict zones. So far I have spent 4 months in Iraq helping in a trauma hospital on the front lines of the Mosul conflict. I have spent 2.5 months in Bangladesh helping refugees fleeing from the genocide in Myanmar; and I have recently come back from a month in the Bahamas helping with the response to the hurricane that devastated many of the islands.
In the last few years, Samaritans Purse DART have also responded in the Congo (ebola), Ecuador (earthquake), Philippines (typhoon), Nepal (earthquake), Mozambique (cyclone), Liberia (ebola), Guatemala (volcano), Venezuela (civil unrest), Mexico-US border (refugee crisis), Australia (bushfires) and to multiple countries in Europe (Syrian refugee crisis).
Throughout my time working for Samaritan's Purse I have been privileged to see first hand how beneficial this charity is to people in crisis. The disaster and assistance response team is deployed to the most desperate of situations, where help is needed quickly! The response is also tailored to the need of the situation, is professional, to the highest standards and the care given is full of compassion and dignity, with a true focus on equipping and empowering local people. Whilst I'm unable to respond every time Samaritans Purse call, I decided that this year I wanted to try and do more for this great charity to continue the work they are doing!
I decided to set myself a challenge of completing 2020km in 2020 to try and raise £2020 for Samaritans Purse. I will be cycling, running, hiking, skiing, rowing, swimming... and anything else that is powered solely by me in order to reach my goal. The target will not include the walking around I do at work - Fitbit doesn't count!
As a comparison - last year I managed 491km in a year... I've got a long way to go! Any donations to spur me on would be massively appreciated!
