Story
In 2022 I turned 60 and rather than settle for a bus pass I decided to take on a number of physical challenges. It culminated in me running both London and Dublin marathons in October 2022.
I then realised that because London Marathon is going back to it’s usual April date in 2023 I had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to run the world’s most iconic marathon twice in one year, the year I turn 60.
So, from the ashes of the Summer of 60 Challenge, the 60/60 Challenge is born!
2 x London Marathons at 60 and raising £6060 for Brian Tumour Research
I first became aware of Brain Tumour Research during the first Luton Walk for Hope in 2021 when the courage of Amani and her family blew me away. Having been diagnosed with a brain tumour at just 22 Amani created a platform to fight for those with brain cancer and their families (@Fight4Amani), raising awareness at how unfair and underfunded that fight is.
Sadly Amani lost her fight early in 2022 and the 2022 Luton Walk for Hope was held in her memory and the memory of another local boy, George Fox.
Amani #Forever23 and George #Forever13
Brain tumours are the biggest killers of children and people under 40 in the UK yet they command only 1% of the national cancer spending. Despite massive improvements in treatment and prognosis of many other cancers, brain cancer has lagged behind and treatment options haven’t changed much in 20 years.
If I can do a tiny bit to change this, or at least to raise awareness, then every step will be worth it.
