This year, as part of Life cycle 6, I will be cycling the 'four points of the compass' of Great Britain: Lizard Point; Lowestoft Ness; Ardnamurchan Point; and Dunnet Head (1400 miles) to raise funds for the early detection of breast cancer.

Worldwide, the number of new cases of cancer is expected to double by 2030. Breast cancer is the second  most common type, after lung cancer. Some screening tests are available for breast cancer but they have limited effectiveness and are based on detecting cancers once symptoms have appeared.

Professor Robertson, who leads the Centre of Excellence for Autoimmunity in Cancer, developed the world’s first blood test for lung cancer. This funding will develop new early blood tests which detect anti-bodies to identify breast cancer before the symptoms have appeared– resulting in more lives being saved through treatment of patients before tumours have spread.
