Story
Hi, I'm Kate and this is my just giving page.
My husband Steve and I travelled to Nepal in October 2016 to volunteer with the UK based charity Community Action Nepal.
Founded by Doug Scott CBE (who in 1975 made the first British ascent of Everest) CAN is a charity that aims to support and help the mountain people of Nepal by working with communities to improve health, education and welfare.
Since 1998 CAN has established more than 50 community projects bringing benefits to 250,000 people. At present they operate 9 Health Posts, 8 schools and 3 mountain porter rescue shelters. Their work has become even more necessary since the earthquakes of 2015.
For 5 months Steve and I lived and worked in Melamchi-Ghyang, a remote Sherpa commuty devastated by the earthquakes and to this day most of the accommodation in the village is still temporary. Despite these hardships the community welcomed us with open arms and we very soon felt at home amongst the friendly and resourceful people there.
Our volunteer work involved Steve installing showers and washing facilities in the school and helping with general construction. I taught English to the older students and looked after the youngest pupils while their teacher was away on maternity leave.
It was a privilege to live with a community that had so little and yet gave us so much. It was a humbling and rewarding experience that we shall never forget - we left having learnt far more than we taught.
We funded our own travels so all donations go directly to Community Action Nepal and the many Nepali communities still in need of aid following the earthquakes
Thank- you, Kate x
