Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Blood cancer has taken its toll on myself and my family for the last 5 years.  In 2016, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, after a 12 month battle with chemotherapy as my weapon of choice I was placed in remission in April 2017.

Just 4 weeks later my mum was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer, around 5,700 people are diagnosed each year.  Unfortunately whilst treatment can be effective at relieving symptoms, managing complications and prolonging life, Myeloma is currently an incurable (terminal) cancer.

My mum (Julia) had a particularly aggressive form of Myeloma which attacked her spine quite quickly and resulted in her losing the use of her legs within months of diagnosis.  She endured 3.5 years of extended periods in hospital, brutal chemotherapy, radio therapy, blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants.  She battled like the true warrior that she was, fighting with dignity and grace, never complained about her situation and the intensity of the treatment she had to endure.

Sadly on 27th January 2021 we lost our mum to this terrible disease.  I had wanted to do this fundraiser last year but lockdown put a halt on my plans.  With my friend Sophie choosing to do the exact same challenge for her charity Bliss, we decided to join forces and do it together as soon as the borders open.

The challenge is the Scottish Coast to Coast MTB Route.  400km with 7800m of ascent and descent across the Scottish Highlands.  We are yet to decide whether we traverse East to West or West to East.  This ride is classed as the ultimate coast to coast mountain bike ride in the UK.  We will be doing the challenge unsupported and wild camping (with the occasional bothy) along the way.  We expect to complete the challenge in around 7 days so approx 60km per day.

Neither of us are great navigators so highly likely we could end up lost in the highlands - another reason for us to join forces.

I do this challenge in honour of my mum, to raise some much needed funds for Myeloma UK in the hope that one day their scientific research will find a cure.  Losing my mum is proving to be the hardest challenge I am yet to face.  The coast to coast challenge will be physically demanding but nothing compared to the pain and suffering she endured.  I would be grateful if you will help me honour her by donating if you can.

Thank you, Kate x
