Lets be honest men are useless where health issues are concerned and especially where it involves 'embarrassing' bits of their body; none is more embarrassing to a male than the prostate. However there were around 43,400 new cases of prostate cancer in the UK in 2012, that’s around 119 men every day. It is the third most common cancer in the UK (2012) and accounts for 13% of all new cases (2012). It is the most common cancer in males and is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men. Since the late-1970s, prostate cancer incidence rates have more than doubled (147% increase) in Great Britain. There are no known risk factors for the disease and so education, early diagnosis and appropriate intervention is essential.
18 months ago I started running again in an attempt to improve my own health - at 55 years of age it was no fun at first and it was more of a stumble than anything else. However, I've been fortunate that unlike a number of my friends and colleagues in recent years my health has been fairly robust. Running my first marathon and for Prostate Cancer UK is a my way of starting to pay back for my good fortune.
