Story
On 6th April my challenge will be to pedal from 8.00am-5.00pm at The Campus, Highlands Lane, Weston super Mare, with the support from any willing volunteers for short breaks. As most of my family and friends will know, I'm not exactly fit and I'm fairly well in to middle age and perhaps a bit more!! Please spare a few minutes to read why I think it's worth putting myself through what surely will be hellish torture!!
On my way to work I pass a fleet of mini buses dropping children off outside their school. There's a great deal of noise, laughter, shouting, tantrums and words of persuasion from parents. Nothing unusual, just a normal busy school morning. Except, some of these children have very complex disabilities, all of them have a learning disability, which is for life. They will face endless challenges, difficulties and issues that will last long into adulthood. From the age of 16, North Somerset People First, can offer them independent, specially tailored, services and support aimed at reducing the isolation of people with a learning disablilty and tacking many other difficulites. We aim to encourage and empower them to speak up and take more control of their own lives.
For the last 11 years I have worked for this amazing organisation, North Somerset People First, alongside dedicated colleagues who are passionate in their belief that everyone deserves to be given the opportunity to have a Voice and a Choice in how they live their lives. We receive a very small grant from Local Government which we can no longer rely on.
So, with a huge staff effort, and help from the community, we kick off our "Appealing April" campaign. We hope it will help us to raise vital funds to ensure we can maintain our current services, develop new ones, and continue to make a difference to many people who are often not heard.
If you can, please make a donation and help motivate my poor little legs to keep pedalling.
