Story

We made it!

My sister and I started our 192 mile trek across the country by traditionally dipping our boots in the Irish Sea at St Bees, collecting a pebble and ending it, doing the same in the at Robin Hood’s Bay and casting the same pebble.  It was tough at times, especially with the ever increasing foot injuries, but thinking of our 2 close friends, in whose memory I walked for, and news of the increasing donations spurred me on. We met some lovely people along the way, doing the same trek, from all over the world and fellow Brits and had great support and encouragement from friends and family at home. Thank you everyone.

Contiue reading for our origianl story:

This is my pained expression on the summit of Snowdon last October in the rain, gale force winds and no visibility, wet through, and freezing if I dared to stop. I struggled up following my fit son, Brad, who raced ahead and stated that it was fun!!

Despite that I felt very satisfied at the end and was inspired to do more, but the next challenge was not a consideration at that time.

Following several failed attempts by my sister, Michelle Davies-Millar, to persuade me to join her on her second expedition to base camp Everest last year (you can read more about her previous challenges on her page), as ‘I don’t camp’ or consider extended periods without hairwashing facilities, she quickly succeeded in encouraging me to join her on the Alfred Wainwright’s Coast 2 Coast walk in September this year, not a single tent involved and daily washing facilities, hooray!!

This is a 191 mile walk across the north of England from the Irish Sea at St Bees on the Cumbrian Coast, the trail crosses the Lakeland Fells, the Pennine Uplands, the Yorkshire Dales, the Cleveland Hills and finally the North Yorkshire Moors ending at Robin Hood’s Bay on Yorkshire’s East Coast. We intend to do it over 16 days as we are not as fit as some and hope to have time to enjoy the scenery when we’re not cursing our sore muscles and accumulative tiredness!!

This started out as a personal challenge for us both, but during the planning stages and discussions with many including my dear friend and neighbour, Austin Jones, who sadly came to the end of his long battle with cancer just before Christmas, I have decided to walk it in aide of Cancer Research.

More than 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime and I’m sure like me you may know others, family, friends, work colleagues and for me patients and clients, young and old, including an old friend from my nurse training days, Wendy, who died only 3 weeks after her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer leaving 3 young children and another friend, Debbie's inspirationally positive attitude during her long treatment for breast cancer.  If you can support this valuable charity, please give whatever you can. I am funding this challenge myself so all donations will go directly to Cancer Research.
