Story
My daughter Ayisha, was diagnosed with type I diabetes at the age of 7. I cannot begin to describe how overwhelmed and devastated I was on hearing this.
I will always remember the feeling of powerlessness I had on that very day and a deep sense of sadness and self-uselessness when Ayisha asked, 'Mummy, when will I get better and when will my diabetes go away or am I going to die?'
It is heartbreaking when your child is diagnosed with a disease that currently cannot be cured and gut wrenching when you as a parent can do nothing to take it away.
But I am so proud of Ayisha for since that day forward she has taken up this gauntlet and every day challenges diabetes to get her down.
Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that comes with daily complications such as hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and ketoacidosis and long term severe complications such as blindness, neuropathy and cancer. To reduce and hopefully prevent these outcomes diabetes has to be managed and monitored on a daily basis. As yet there is no cure for type I diabetes but the Juvenile Diabetic Research Foundation (JDRF) is a group which funds international research programmes to cure, treat and prevent type I diabetes. Their vision: 'to create a world without Type I Diabetes'.
With your help I'm hoping to raise money to support the work of the JDRF and in turn help every child and young person living with type I diabetes.
Thank you for your support.
