Clipper 2017-18 Race · 27 August 2017 to 31 July 2018 ·

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

I am hoping to raise at least £2,000 for the UK Sepsis Trust. Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body's response to an infection injures it's own tissues and organs. Sepsis leads to shock, multiple organ failure and death especially if not treat promptly. It is difficult to predict, diagnose and treat. The UK would see 147 000 cases annually; therefore, an estimated mortality of over 40 000 annually.

I work full time as a nursing director of quality for the NHS in a commissioning group (CCG). I've been a nurse since leaving school and specialised in Neurosciences. I've worked in some of the largest university hospitals in England. Doing this clipper race (Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race) will be a life changing event for me and my family. My husband Martin has been so encouraging and supportive. I am going to compete in leg 8, which starts in New York, heads across the Atlantic to Derry-Londonderry and then onto to the finish line in Liverpool by the end of July 2018.

Please support the UK Sepsis Trust and feel free to share xx
