Story
My working life brought frequent encounters with those suffering from Alzheimer’s dementia and those who loved and cared for them. However, true empathy and an understanding of the devastating impact of this disease only comes with first hand experience. I lost my much loved granny to dementia who by the end was unable to recognise nor remember her own son. Now that son, my father, is rapidly losing his independence, being robbed of his memory and grasp on reality. It is a cruel, indiscriminate disease with an uncertain trajectory which leaves family and friends reeling in its wake. Doctors are often of little help, where does one turn? The Alzheimer’s Society provides support, signposting and research. One step at a time….
