Story
I made it! Many thanks to all of you who sponsored me. To those of you who have not - there is still time.
I left London at 11am with David Mitchell who works as a consultant vascular surgeon in Bristol and two junior doctors who work in Brighton. I had the route programmed into my satnav but it malfunctioned - luckily the Brighton boys knew the way - although we still managed a few detours. Getting out of London took a long time as the traffic was very heavy, but we had a clear run after Mitcham.
Reigate Hill was not a problem and we stopped for a quick sandwich past the half-way point on the top of Arnold Hill. It was very cold despite winter gloves and shoe covers - definitely an Icicle Bicycle! Luckily the winter cycle tops which David designed were very warm. After lunch we headed for the Ditchling Beacon - this was a killer and I was last to the top. Then it was all downhill to Brighton and as we came down the hill the setting sun came out. We stormed into Brighton in formation and I won the sprint to the pier just as the sun went down.
We were met by my wife Clare, who took the photo, and Rebecca Wilkinson, the Fundraising Manager for the Circulation Foundation, who produced a bottle of bubbly. I was expecting to have sore legs but cycling to work must have helped as I think I could have cycled back the next day if I hadn't been staying in Brighton for the Annual Meeting of the Vascular Society. The stretch that Clare gave me in the evening also helped - although it hurt at the time.
The other good news is that I have reached my target of raising over £1000 for the Circulation Foundation so once again many thanks to all of you who sponsored me.
